These days, a black-maned lion is a rarity, having been a coveted hunters' trophy for many years. The destruction of these great cats has accelerated as their numbers have dwindled - everyone anxious to get his before they disappear totally. The most likely place to seem them is on the Serengeti Plains in northern Tanzania or in Kenya's Mara River county.
