GLIMMER OF SOLITUDE

It is an early autumn morning. The call of a loon ripples the silent surface of a lake in the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. Loons are different from most other birds in that their bones aren't hollow - notice they float lower in the water than other aquatic birds. They are also excellent divers, reaching depths of 200 feet. But their call is what really sets them apart . . . once you hear it, you never forget it.
