The Sioux usually had a chief, two subchiefs and two lesser ones under them. You could tell who was who by the headdress. The subchiefs did not have full headdresses. Instead, each wore a headcovering called a "wichasa."
The circles on this man's chest represent the sun's power to heal Sun Dance wounds. There are lightning bolts painted around his eyes, denoting his courage and fierceness. His war shield and its colors represent his vision.
