The Comanche, a lord of the Southern Plains, numbered among the greatest horsemen the world has ever produced. Through warfare, they destroyed the dreams of a Spanish empire in North America and for about sixty years were the greatest obstacle to the white settlers in the Southwest. They raided hundreds of miles from their villages into Mexico, East Central Texas, north into Kansas and Colorado and west into New Mexico. An ordinary warrior owned as many as 250 horses and a war chief as many as 1500.
