The middle 1800s brought the great westward surge, which aroused and antagonized the Indian tribes whose land was being violated and whose staff of life, the buffalo, was being exterminated. In response, they attacked relentlessly. Warring bands waiting silently on high ridges would receive smoke signals from their scouts, whereupon they would descend in full fury on the unsuspecting trespassers.
