This scene of the 1880s depicts a "mud" wagon (light coach for rough country crossings) pulling out of a river in Montana. Travelers starting out in the relative luxury of the heavy Concord coach were forced to switch to the lighter wagon either as the terrain became uneven or at the first stage stop.
