"The Long Column" is a United States Cavalry column, troop after troop, coming out of the foothills onto the valley floor on one of their long patrols. Known to the Indians as "Pony Soldier" or "Long Knife," the cavalryman lived a life of hardship and danger. He rode endless miles of desert, plains and mountains, protecting wagon trains, stagecoach routes and telegraph lines from Indian attack as the white man pushed west into the Indian's hunting grounds.
