Most trappers were loners who scorned the soft, confining life in towns and settlements for the harsh freedom of the mountain timberlands. Away from his own kind, the trapper's existence mirrored the life patterns of the animals he trapped. In the wild, boundless forests, success was measured in survival and furs.
"The Trapper" is an old man, his face lined and seamed by the weather and adversity, but he remains a potent figure in American history, strong, fierce and independent. Immersed in a hostile environment, they somehow survived and prospered.
