"We had seen the young lady in this painting participating in a ceremonial dance on the San Carlos Apache Reservation. We were struck with her elegance, dignity and natural grace and asked her to pose for us. Knowing the Apache love of vivid color, this unusual old blanket seemed just the right element to enhance those qualities."
