The sea is far behind her now. Splashing in the surf is fun but this is special, this quiet place, deep in the dunes. Rushing wings break the silence in sudden, bright surprise and joy waves over the girl as she watches the gull about to alight.
Kneeling here in the sun-warmed sand, all about her she senses summer's foreverness. But even the longest day has its evening, and the days of summer must ease their way into fall. Then she will look back when the beach is far away and remember gulls and dunes and too short a day.
