Labrador Retrievers are very powerful swimmers, known for retrieving fish, back in the days when people fished on the Grand Banks. Then, when the fishermen landed on Newfoundland, they still needed help getting food so the Lab was used as a game dog as well. The painting shows two dogs on the rocky shore, looking out to sea. The Yellow Lab and the Black Lab are at Marblehead on Lake Erie. Everytime there is a nor'easter, you get tremendous waves coming in. The waves were too big that day so "No Swimming Lessons Today."
