"This is the first 'old' cowboy' painting I ever did and Slim was, for me, the icon of all the old-timers. When I came to Wyoming, there he was, looking like he had stepped right out of a history book. Nobody here thought twice about him, but I painted him nine times - more than any other cowboy.
"He lived in a small hotel room, where he kept his weathered saddle on a barrel and he looked wonderful. So I painted him surrounded by red, white and blue graffiti for a more modern, semi-abstract feel. None of the initials mean anything. I used them because they are so out of context with him, as he is out of context with modern Western life."
