Many trappers and mountain men took Indian women as wives. The women were generally hard working and industrious and relieved the men from all the chores they would have to contend with as bachelors, not to mention the fact that they offered companionship in an otherwise lonely existence. "My painting is a bit 'tongue in cheek,' but I believed it represents a scene that could have taken place countless times."
