"I've always maintained that I'm not a historical painter. The story is not so much in what I paint but in how I paint it. That's very true of this piece, 'The Quiet Place.' The composition was the driving force behind it. This cowboy is taking a moment out of his life to contemplate a river running through a thousand-foot canyon. I remember doing the same thing in my cowboy days."
