“Even though I talk about my art as being an emotional representation of my life,” says Hanks, “the model does have a strong influence on a painting. I don’t look for photographic modeling types. I look for real people that I think would look good in a painting and most of them have not modeled before. Their innocence and shyness comes through.” As is often the case with Steve Hanks’ nudes, the quality of light and shadow is as much the subject of the painting as the women.
